HANDS-ON CLASSES IN THE GARDEN
Fourteen years ago when I moved to Summerfield, people would zoom down our very long gravel driveway, mistaking it for just another country road until they saw our house at the end. Now I watch them creep in, taking in their lush surroundings. Newcomers profess that their blood pressure dropped 20 points since they turned in from the road. .
My 3 acres of gardens are my little slice of paradise. Students love seeing it change month by month as they come for classes. They come away with new ideas for landscaping their own home, growing fruits and vegetables organically, and money savings ways to enrich their soil and reduce pests and disease. They become confident, fearless gardeners who go home to transform their own landscapes into a paradise of their own. They consistently tell me my gardening program “far exceeded” their expectations – and they often come back for another year.
This is my fifth year of offering “hands-on” classes in my garden. It is a great joy for me to share research based horticultural practices and practical experience I have gained over 23 years of gardening.
I am confident I can show you how to be successful growing edibles and ornamentals, or simply how to maintain the landscape you have today. You will learn economical, natural ways to fertilize, propagate, control pests, and much more. You will discover a whole new world of plants – evergreens for sun and shade, groundcovers, flowers of every shape, size and color, and interesting things to grow and eat like velvet purple snap beans, hardy kiwis, figs, and Asian pears. I guarantee that you will learn things in every class that will delight you and that you can put to use immediately in your own garden.
Time spent outside creating your own gardens can give tremendous peace and satisfaction. It is magical to plant a tiny seed and watch it grow into a bouquet of zinnias, make your own gorgeous flower arrangements without going to the store, grow the freshest basil and tomatoes for your bruschetta, and eat raspberries and plums still warm from the sun. You may think you are nurturing your plants, but will really be nurturing your soul.
